Village Dry Toilet Fund

Adequate sanitation is an important to help stop spreading diseases such as Ebola

Very typically, a village or larger size town needs a public toilet (to allow multiple use) and most of them are in desperate need of such facilities. Any existing facilities are usually rare, overused, suffering from neglect and in need of maintenance, or rarely emptied in high use areas.

The above image is typical and shows the concrete base of a toilet which is no longer safe or useable.

I am looking to raise sponsorship for the project of toilet facilities constructed in either or both small villages and larger towns, the need is greater where there are most people with fewest resources between them.

If I can gather interest, I intend to raise funds to establish toilet facilities which will be dry toilets, similar to the image below.

The above structure is a simple concrete plinth built over dug hole and would satisfy the needs of a small family. For public needs a larger structure would be needed, including for male and female, situated where numbers of people will gather, such as a market or town centre.

If you would like to contribute to the "Sierra Leone Dry Toilet Fund", please contact me on kainjamahun@gmail.com and I will send you further details.

Technical details

Toilet facilities will need proper maintenance, including cleaning and sometimes emptying (this would be by prior arrangement with a tanker.)

If properly cared for, toilets of simple construction can last for years and provide a relatively safe environment for those who use them.

If toilets are maintained they will be disinfected / cleaned periodically so as to avoid or severely reduce the risk of spreading infection

Note the ventilation pipe in the picture which is important to remove excess heat and fumes

If an existing toilet can't be used (in disrepair or overflowing), villagers will use nearby bushes and vegetation. This is obviously a safety hazard in terms of possible spread of infections.

Private village houses can have their own toilet facilities which may or may not be adequate, for the purpose of this text I am only considering public toilets. However, public toilets could be of use for anyone without their own home facilities.

If water supply is available, a different technology to the dry toilet can be considered.

Some suggestion of  an improved Dry Toilet Facilities !!
